Spotify now has 60 million paying users

The biggest streaming platform keeps getting bigger

Spotify’s customer base is growing, with the streaming service now boasting over 60 million paying subscribers.

The news comes in a new report by Reuters, and follows claims back in March that the service had 50 million paying users, meaning that 10 million new customers had come to the service in just four months.

It extends Spotify’s lead over its main rival, Apple Music, who revealed back in early June that they have 27 million paying subscribers.

The news follows a report earlier in the year that indie labels could soon hide their new releases behind a paywall.

A new agreement between the streaming service and digital rights agency Merlin, who represent thousands of the world’s leading independent labels including XL, Domino and Warp, plus their associated subsidiaries, will see a ‘windowing’ option introduced. This means new albums will be available only to Spotify’s paying subscribers for the first two weeks after release.

The move is to designed to both encourage more users to pay for their Spotify subscriptions, thus generating more money for artist and label, and provide a more enticing offer to any artists out there who want to keep their music away from the service.

Primus release first new song in 6 years

Hear ‘The Seven’ below

Primus have revealed ‘The Seven’, their first new song in six years, alongside info on their new album, ‘The Desaturating Seven’.

‘The Desaturating Seven’ is set for a September 29 release on ATO Records – it’ll be the group’s first album in six years, following 2011’s ‘Green Naugahyde’.

The album is based on a 1970 children’s book which frontman Les Claypool often reads to his kids, in which goblins steal all the colour out of the world,

“The dark imagery and beauty of the art struck me immediately and I thought, ‘This would make good fodder for a piece of music’,” explains Claypool in a press release. “The use of color and darkness both in the paintings and the writing was compelling and now, near two decades later, the metaphor of greed, gluttony, and deceit vs unity of the masses is eerily relevant. I brought the notion to the Primus guys and they were all for it. Plus, I figured it’s about time someone brought ‘Goblin Rock’ back to the fold.”

Check out the album’s lead single ‘The Seven’ below.

Queens Of The Stone Age cancel festival date “due to injury”

The band will no longer perform at Outside Lands

Queens Of The Stone Age have been forced to cancel their appearance at Outside Lands festival due to injury.

The announcement was made via the festival’s Twitter earlier today (July 31), confirming that the band will no longer be playing at the San Franscisco based event, which is set to take place next month. Queens Of The Stone Age had been scheduled to perform on August 12.

“Queens apologize for any inconvenience & we look forward to returning to the Bay Area at a later date,” the band followed-up.

No further news has been released at the time of writing.

Check out the tweets in question below.

Queens Of The Stone Age release their new album ‘Villains’ on August 25.

Speaking to NME about the sound of the album, frontman Josh Homme said: “There are some slower moments but I like to dance, man, and whether it’s Eagles [Of Death Metal] or Queens or [Them Crooked] Vultures there’s no reason not to conjoin rock’n’roll and dance and hallelujah and darkness and all that in one thing. In a world of desperately going for ‘likes’ I think ‘Villains’ is more like, ‘We’ll take the dislikes, we’ll take all the outcasts’. This album is here to do bad guy stuff.”

He added: “Queens has always been like an ice-cream parlour or a video arcade, it’s safe from the bullshit of the day. I’m not interested in being topical in that way, yet at the same time it’s completely about now.”

QOTSA’s full upcoming UK and Ireland tour dates are below.

NOVEMBER
Saturday 18 – LONDON SSE Arena Wembley
Sunday 19 – MANCHESTER Arena
Tuesday 21  – LONDON O2 Arena
Thursday 23 – EDINBURGH Usher Hall

Ryan Adams attacks The Strokes on Twitter

“Abert Hammond is a more horrible songwriter than his dad. If that’s possible.”

Ryan Adams has taken to Twitter to attack The Strokes‘ Julian Casablancas and Albert Hammond Jr..

Earlier this evening (July 31), Adams channelled his inner Liam Gallagher and tweeted “Abert Hammond is a more horrible songwriter than his dad. If that’s possible. It rains in Sthtrn CA & washes out the dirt As you were RA x”

He swiftly followed that up with a jibe at Strokes frontman Julian Casablancas, tweeting “Julian Casablancas: who got you strung out on lasagna tho?”

Check out the tweets in question below.

The incident follows events earlier this year surrounding the relationship between The Strokes and Adams, with the former claiming that Adams was in some way responsible for Hammond Jr.’s past heroin addiction.

The comments come in a new book by Lizzy Goodman called Meet Me in the Bathroom: Rebirth and Rock and Roll in New York City, 2001–2011, which details the rise of 2000s NYC indie bands such as The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, Interpol and Vampire Weekend.

In a lengthy excerpt from the book, Hammond’s bandmates describe Ryan Adams as having been a “bad influence” on Hammond’s past heroin habit while the band also talk about their rivalry with The Killers.

“I remember Julian threatening to beat Ryan [Adams] up if he hung out with me, as a protective thing,” said Albert Hammond Jr. “He’d heard that Ryan would come and give me heroin, so he was just like, ‘if you come to my apartment again with heroin, I’m going to kick your ass’.”

Hammond continued: “I hadn’t really been doing it in baggie form until Ryan showed up. He was definitely a bad influence.”

Meanwhile, Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas added: “Did I specifically tell Ryan to stay away from Albert? I can’t remember the details, to be honest. I think heroin just kind of crosses a line. It can take a person’s soul away. So it’s like if someone is trying to give your friend a lobotomy — you’re gonna step in.”

Responding to their claims, Adams denied ever giving Hammond heroin and said: “That’s so sad, because Albert and I were friends. If anything, I really felt like I had an eye on him in a way that they never did. I was around and we actually spent time together. He would show me his songs. It was like, “No one ever listens to my music, but do you want to hear it?” I would be like, ‘fuck yeah!’ I loved him so deeply. I would never ever have given him a bag of heroin. I remember being incredibly worried about him, even after I continued to do speedballs.
“I didn’t do drugs socially, and I don’t remember doing drugs with Albert ever. I wanted to smoke cigarettes and drink, like, dark red wine or vodka and write all night.

He added: “It was very dramatic, the way it all went down. I was asked to meet one single person in a bar and I got there and it was the whole band and Ryan. I was more or less given a lecture, a hypocritical lecture, and then they told me that I was not going to be part of their scene any more.

“It was very weird. It was easy to brand me as the problem. I would suspect that they soon learned that I was not the problem.”

Jack White is recording a new solo album

Jack White

Jack White is in the studio and working on a new solo album.

The news comes from his label Third Man Records, who today shared two photos of White in the studio with a group of musicians. Based in studios in both New York and Los Angeles, the label confirmed that the photos were taken during sessions for a third solo album from Jack White – the follow-up to 2014’s ‘Lazaretto’.

Check out the two images below, via Third Man Records on Twitter.

Earlier this year, Jack White gave a rare interview, elaborating on the new solo music he was writing.

Speaking to The New Yorker for a rare profile feature, White revealed that he’d been recording on a reel-to-reel tape machine that he’d bought when he was 14 with money made from “mowing lawns.” The piece also sheds a light on his current recording space, which is described as sparse in that it only contains his recording equipment, a cot and four windows – all with the shades drawn.

Talking about the set-up, White said: “If I could just break my leg and be in the hospital for six weeks, what would it be like? Something about a room and a cot and a little space. You have nothing to do.”

White also elaborated on his shifting attitude towards writing music. “I’m going to try to write songs where I can’t be heard by the next-door neighbor,” the 41-year-old said. “And I want to write like Michael Jackson would write — instead of writing parts on the instruments or humming melodies, you think of them. To do everything in my head and to do it in silence and use only one room.”

A ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ sequel is coming next year

The cult Tim Burton classic is set for a comic book sequel

The Nightmare Before Christmas is set to get a comic book sequel next year, 25 years after the original’s release.

Tim Burton’s animated Disney classic was release to modest success back in 1993, before going on to become something of a cult classic. Despite many reported attempts by Disney to create a sequel to the beloved Halloween-meets-Christmas epic, the producer has repeatedly denied any right to produce a follow-up.

Now, however, a sequel of sorts is in the works. As Hollywood Reporter have revealed, The Nightmare Before Christmas is set to receive a comic book follow-up, set for release in 2018.

Expanding the story beyond that of the original film, The Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey will follow protagonist Jack Skellington’s ghost dog Zero on an adventure around the film’s festive location Christmas Town.

Produced by publisher Tokyopop, the story will be released in a series of full-colour single issues, released direct to comic book stores, before being released in a collected volume.

The rest of Blazin Squad surprise Marcel on Love Island reunion show

Marcel Somerville has recently left Love Island but his reality stardom doesn’t end there. During the reunion show, Marcel was surprised by some of his Blazin Squad bandmates.

As Marcel joined Caroline Flack on the sofa, the presenter brought on four of his bandmates to perform their 2003 hit ‘Flip Reverse’. However, including Marcel, there are eleven members of Blazin Squad.

We can’t say where the rest were but the group have revealed that Blazin Squad are set to reunite but maybe not all 10; “a good chunk” of the members have been confirmed.

Blazin Squad reunite (sort of)

Speaking to NME about the Soundtrack To His Life, Marcel revealed that “Crossroads” by Blazin’ Squad was his go-to karaoke song. “Whenever I’m anywhere that does karaoke, everyone is like “Marc, do it, do it!” – so it ends up happening. I always try to do like ABBA or Bon Jovi, but everyone always makes me do ‘Crossroads’”

Marcel spent much of his time in the Love Island villa mentioning Blazin’ Squad at every opportunity – it’s worked, though, with the band’s Spotify streams soaring by 2500% since the series started.

Blazin’ Squad’s initial career spanned form 2001-2004 – they released two albums in that time, ‘In The Beginning’ and ‘Now Or Never’.

Enter Shikari release new single ‘Live Outside’

News on the band’s new album is imminent

Enter Shikari have revealed their new single ‘Live Outside’.

The track received its first play on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show tonight, as her Hottest Record. Frontman Rou Reynolds stated that ‘Live Outside’ found the band embracing a new mentality. “I don’t think that we’ve ever gone in with the mindset that we had this time,” he stated. “This time there was a sound in mind, a focus, a direction. It felt like, ‘Yeah, this is it!’”

“I wanted to focus on melody – a lot of our songs are five songs in one, they flutter all over the place,” Reynolds continued. “This is the start of a new era.”

“Each album is a bit of a progression for us, but we did a tour last year that really impacted us – it was the first time we’ve headlined arenas, and it felt like it changed the game for us. I feel much more confident as a songwriter.”

A typically warped melding of electronics and post-hardcore, the track’s new melodic purpose is perfect for the festival stages and huge arenas that Enter Shikari have come to call home.

They also confirmed that news on their new album is coming tomorrow (August 1).

Listen back to ‘Live Outside’ below via Spotify.

Live Outside (Edit), a song by Enter Shikari on Spotify

It’s Enter Shikari’s first material since ‘Supercharge’, their huge, Big Narstie-featuring last single, released back in May. “In the world there’s just so much division, and music is the best route for that,” Reynolds told NME around the release of that track. “It’s the one thing that brings people together indiscriminately.”

Enter Shikari play a huge UK arena tour later this year – dates for that are as follows:

Thu November 16 2017 – LIVERPOOL Arena
Fri November 17 2017 – CARDIFF Motorpoint Arena
Sat November 18 2017 – NOTTINGHAM Motorpoint Arena
Sun November 19 2017 – NEWCASTLE Metro Radio Arena
Tue November 21 2017 – MANCHESTER Victoria Warehouse
Wed November 22 2017 – BRIGHTON Centre

Ryan Reynolds shares first official look at ‘Deadpool 2’s Domino

“Some people just know how to work a red carpet”

Deadpool Domino

Ryan Reynolds tweeted the first official image of Domino from Deadpool 2 today. The character will be played by Zazie Beetz who you might recognise from last year’s Atlanta.

The sequel to the hugely successful Deadpool movie will have Reynolds starring alongside Beetz as mutant mercenary Domino and Josh Brolin as time-travelling cyborg Cable to make up the X-Force.

The photo tweeted out by Reynolds is a callback to one of the first promotional images from the original Deadpool. This one shows Beetz in her full Domino get-up lying atop a Deadpool rug. The image is captioned: “Some people just know how to work a red carpet”.

Check out the reveal below.

Recently, Deadpool creator and comic book writer Rob Liefeld has compared the second movie to ’90s Jackie Chan-Chris Tucker flick Rush Hour.

Speaking about Josh Brolin as Cable, Liefeld said: “When I see the two of them I’m like “It’s going to be comic book’s equivalent to Rush Hour, and I don’t know if comic fans are ready for it. I think it’s going to be great.”

Ryan Reynolds has also shared a picture from the set, featuring himself in full Deadpool costume, with Hunt For The Wilderpeople actor Julian Dennison on his back. Dennison joins the confirmed cast for Deadpool 2, alongside Jack Kesy as villain Black Tom Cassidy, Zazie Beetz, Shitori Kutsuna and Leslie Uggams.

Deadpool 2 is currently set to premiere on June 1, 2018.
